if you plan- you succeed!
If you’re going to visit a city, could you take out half an hour before and actually look at some of the people who you might meet? I was recently there in Mumbai, and I sent out a note to the people in my network who are there in Mumbai, saying “I have half a day off, and nothing to do, would you like to meet?” and I was flawed by this one ! Within less than 2 hours, I had 4 invitations for the evening. By the end of the day I had 6 ! Now, these are very busy, important people ! They made time from their schedule because they knew that I am going to be in Bombay only for that particular day ! We had engaged in conversations, we had as they call networked online- but on a very different level ! These are people I’ve been exchanging mails for a long time and finally got an opportunity to meet. Plan ahead. You going to a conference, make a list of things that you can take along for the people you might meet there. I was once attending a course, and all of us were supposed to do projects. While I was doing my research I actually, got information that I knew would help somebody else’s project. I took that too. I unfortunately thought that I would do that for a couple of people. But everytime I looked for information for myself, I found information that would help somebody else. I made 15 different dossiers and gave out to each one of them saying-“ this might help you!”. I did not consciously go out and look for information, or decide I will make a dossier just to impress them. While I was doing my own research, stuff that they would need kept popping up ! And that is the point of a networker. You don’t need to do anything different. On a daily basis, things will come into your mind, ideas, contacts, resources that somebody could make use of ! Instead of just letting them go, collect them and share them. Plan ahead, going out of city-plan ahead, going to a conference-plan ahead, writing a mail-plan ahead, joining a group online-plan ahead. You’ve just joined a group which says- Marketing executives of the world- Fantastic ! 10,000 people- Superb ! How are you going to contribute? Are you going to take part in discussions? Are you going to post questions online? Are you going to vote for polls? Are you going to reply to other’s queries? If no, you’re not doing the right thing! 50 groups on Linkedin may look great, but how good those team members, how good do those group members know you? Have you made a difference to somebody’s life? And this brings me to habit no. 7, which is tomorrow. P.S. This is the seventh part of the series 'Eight Habits of a Highly Effective Networkers'.
