The 48 Laws of Power| Law 2 | Never put too Much Trust in Friends, Learn how to use Enemies

Be wary of friends-they will betray you more quickly, for they are easily aroused to envy.
They also become spoiled and tyrannical. But hire a former enemy and he will be more loyal than a friend, because he has more to prove.
In fact, you have more to fear from friends than from enemies. If you have no enemies, find a way to make them.
My Take....
in the HBO production Rome a lot of this comes thru . . Antony a Caesar ally hires the general who is sent by Rome to fight him. From the same era, Brutus is legend and so is his mother, Caesar's lover.
Now all friends may not fall under this category but it does pay to be paranoid. Most friends have a difficult time adjusting to the fact that you have become what you are and success does bring in seasonal friends !
The topic of enemies is tricky . . my view is don't have enemies . . have foes , challengers, but not enemies.  Further these so called enemies can become such a strong motivational force that they do more good for you than another mortal.
Every genre is littered with legendary tales of bitter rivalries that have made both the foes stronger. Sports, business, performing arts all have had summit battles.
Find a worthy opponent and rise to the occasion . .you will then know your real
powers and abilities!
