'Who do think with win today?' I asked my friend.
'I can tell you', he replied.
'You can? You are sure you will be able to pick a winner?'
'Yes'
'Ok, tell me'
'Its going to be one among the runners who showed up for the race' he said.
Not funny? Funny was not the point, showing up and being ready was.
There's another one. A man keeps praying to God, repeatedly for a win in the lottery and every week he is disappointed that he does not win. Then one day he gets angry with God 'How come you don't ever make me win?' he asks. 'Cause you never buy a lottery ticket' comes the reply.
I am sure you have heard of this one. Both go to something simple and true. If you are not there, not playing by the rules, not playing at all, how do you expect to win?
Job seekers call me regularly to say, 'please find something for me'. I ask them to send me the updated profile by a mail and to mention what it is that they are looking for. You would be surprised how many don't and further out of the few that do send a mail, they just attach the resume and don't even bother to write a cover letter.
Sometimes they tell me to call them when I have something for them and only then they will send the profile. A few even went to the extent of telling me, if the job offer was final only then they would go for an interview.
Are you doing something like this in other parts of your life too?
- You want to network, but you do not want to engage in meaningful conversation or attend any industry symposium, or even participate in online groups.
- You want to learn new things, but are too lazy to find out where you can learn them and worse, don't even want to pay for it.
- You want the job, but don't want to tailor your resume, attend interviews or click professional pictures.
- You want to make money, but don't want to work for it.
- You want to become manager, but really you just hate it when your team makes mistakes or comes to you for support and guidance.
How do you get ready? I am glad you asked.
