Linkedin makes it possible for you to get hired across the globe. It lets you connect on a global platform and now they have some very new ideas on how you can flaunt your profile.
Linkedin.com is the largest, fastest and most used professional social network. In fact, people now have two avatars, one for facebook, the other, more professional for Linkedin.
I have been recommending it for a long long time now (here, here, here, here and here).
I am very active on it too. Currently I have almost 2500+ direct connections which gives me mega access to knowledge, jobs, opportunities and leads. (to connect with me send me an invite on p.bedi@eclathospitality.com)

Skills
Skills are like keywords. Traditionally they have formed the 1st / 2nd para on a resume. Skills allow the recruiter to judge very quickly if you are the right candidate. They help the recruiter and you.
You will come up in searches where the recruiter is looking for something specific.
Ensure you add those skills that add value to your over all profile and restrict to 5.
Certifications
Add all those certificates that you keep carrying in your folder to interviews or scan and attach to email applications.
Ensure the certification is valuable and at the moment, I would recommend you choose the best 3 you have and list those.
Languages
Languages traditionally appear at the end of a resume, however in a globalizing world, language skills can make a big difference.
Most companies would want multi-lingual people on their rolls and with the importance of China and India rising, Mandarin and Hindi are now golden.
Publications
These may not be important or mandatory, but they do lend some authentication to your profile. If you are in academics or like me in the business of writing or consulting, these might give a good idea of the work you do.
There are more, like patents, travel, wordpress, blog, workspaces etc. These may be add value and you can look at adding them, but remember, ensure your profile is not too app heavy. These will add additional bulk to the pdf of your profile that you may choose to send out to recruiters / companies.
