The second habit of highly effective networker is being helpful and available
Some of the most networked professionals I know, run multi-million dollar companies. They have over 25-30,000 people in their network, and still when I write them, I get an answer in say, 24 hours, if not earlier. How amazing is that? Before feedburner was bought over by google, I would regularly write to the man heading their operations. And always get an answer within 4 hours. Sometimes,I would feel that he’s just sitting on his computer all the time. Effective networkers do not look for immediate gains ! They’re looking to be helpful, they’re looking to be available and they know that is what will lead them to habit no. 3. And its not about responding to a mail or a message. Its about responding with solutions and empathy. You will generally not get a terse response. the response will always be well considered and considerate. if they cannot help or just dont want to, they will direct you to someone else or even better mark a copy of the mail to them. linkedin.com has a similar feature in the Questions * Answers section of the site. It is called the 'recommend an expert' option. If there is someone you know could answer the question better, or someone who could add value to the person asking the question, these networkers will put up that name. Its being available and being helpful. Another good idea is to let people know when you will be in their town. I have a simple little page (click here) to let everyone know where I will be when. People can tell call me and see if they want to meet up. you could use Google calendar or some such tool, but the idea remains the same, be available. P.S.
