Background screening—or reference checks of prospective employees—is a normal practice among the big firms, especially multinationals. But stung by recent occurences, small companies too are resorting to it.
Here are 4 things you can do to ensure the company you joining can conduct this process fairly & timely for you. After all your success lies in ensuring this is complete.
1. Be Honest
Getting fired has been listed as the single most devastating event in a workers life, sometimes higher than losing a loved one. If you were fired, or shared a tempestuous relationship with your boss, or just did not fit in, be honest.
2. Give References when asked
I have previously talked about what kind of questions recruiters/companies ask references. see Questions Employers Ask When Conducting a Reference Check
You should mention your references AFTER taking their permission/ascent to do so.
3. Complete your paperwork
You were asked to submit your DOB proof, education certificate, past salary slips, submit them all. Take a written acknoeledgement from HR that you have indeed deposited all required correspondence. When the paper work looks shabby, the questions start to arise.
4. Ask the recruiter what process they follow for background screeing.
If you ask you can probably help. if you are uncomfortable with the process you can tell them not to bother as you are not interested. Please remember, your privacy is yours!
Happy Referencing!
