I wrote (mentioned rather) about having a mentor in life. I have been fortunate enough to have mentors along the way, people who directly/indirectly, knowingly/unknowingly helped me in whatever it was that I was doing at that moment in time.
Today, I called someone I started to look upto as a mentor and found that the advice wasn’t what one would call, sound. Rather, the advice was more in his interest than mine.
So I got thinking. When should someone cease to your mentor.
1. When they have a material interest in your failure.
2. When they begin to believe you may become bigger/better than them (You will eventually, but you will need someone else to mentor you then).
3. When they begin to believe their advice is their command.
4. When they begin to get upset, coz you did not do as you were told.
5. When they stop reasoning, and start saying ‘coz I am saying so!’
6. When they start guessing answers to the questions you pose.
7. When they expect you to check with them before doing anything.
8. When they say ‘I’ve seen many like you before’.
I’m sure there are more, but here my eight.
You don’t agree? find a new mentor!
(ah! That is the 9th!!)
Someday, I’ll write about what you should do to be a good mentor.
p.s. please share your comments on mentoring. Maybe you had/have a fantastic mentor? Maybe you think family members make good mentors? Do ex-bosses? Maybe you had a bad exp where you trusted your mentor more than you should have.
Leave your comments!
Cheers!
