"Does your resume have Visual Appeal?"
That’s right. Visual Appeal?
Does it look goooooood!
Not only should your resume make you look good, it should also look good by itself.
Before I tell you the 'HOW', let me tell you the 'WHY'
Reasons why you should make sure your resume 'look' Good:
With the advent of electronic application systems, it just takes a simple click to apply.
Some sites (monster.com) let you apply to multiple jobs with one click.
With so many applications coming thru ( Recently I received over 200 applications for a Guest Services Assistant position) your resume should stand out.
If it is pleasing to the eyes, is different, the recruiter/company will be more inclined to spend time on it.
> Similar Formats
Everyone has Microsoft word, and so everyone has the standard resume formats.
I like the formats. I just think you can make the formats look attractive.
> A picture is worth a thousand words!
Now the 'HOW"
> Add your picture
professional of course. Maybe a passport size, but if you are applying for a entry level position, a full size may not be a bad idea.
Please ensure this is professionally taken, with very high standards of grooming reflecting in the picture.
Smile. Open mouth, only front teeth showing, happy smile!
> Use a nice/readable font.
personally I am a big fan of 'Garamond', but 'Georgia' is more readable.
see nytimes.com
> Ensure the font size is a minimum 12 and all headings are size 14 & Bold
Key points could be set to Italics
> Use logos of companies you have worked for.
p.s. Put a disclaimer at the bottom of the page 'All Trademarks/Logos belong to the rightful owners. Used here to illustration only'
> Use Pictures!
I got this resume with someone receiving an award from a very well known personality.
Another sent me a pic (embedded) in the resume with her conducting a training session.
Whatever it is that you do or have achieved, if it has been captured as a picture, you should consider using it.
The DONTs! Please DO NOT DO any of the following:
> Multi coloured fonts
> Heavy picture files > If your resume is loaded with pictures or heavy files, it make take too long to download or worse, get rejected by the server.
> Irrelevant pictures/formatting.
It should all make sense! No sense in nonsense…you see, that sentence itself was stupid.
So there you have it, my Suggestions to spruce up your resume.
As always, please feel free to use comments to ask/seek/critique/applaud!
Happy Hunting!
