INTERVIEW SKILLS| Tell me something about yourself? What to do??

InterviewPanel.jpg (280×280)

Every interviewer will start with something like this.
Tell me something about yourself, gets all interviewees nervous.

Oddly enough, YOU should be the BEST person to talk about yourself.
A lot us get nervous, not knowing if what we are about to say is what the interviewer wants to hear.
Should you tell the truth or say something that sounds great and professional?

'honest, hardworking and sincere'
How many others said the same thing?

What should you do to handle the most asked question in interviews?

How should you answer, 'Tell me something about yourself"?

Here's a simple simple strategy:

This answer to question should do 3 things:
1. Showcase your communication skills
2. Showcase your individual talents and uniqueness
3. Lets you control the interview

How? Here's how:

1. Showcase your communication skills
Most interviewers want to know where you are on the communication parameters. This question is more like an ice breaker.
letting you speak for a minute or so, displays that.

Here's what you need to do:
> Write the answer down.
> Read it, learn it, emote it and then share it with people.
> Once it sounds natural and not practiced, get a phone and record the whole thing. It should last a little over a minute.
When you review the video, look for emphasis, body language, smile quotient.
> Improve > record > Review> Improve

2. Showcase your individual talents and uniqueness
This is also the time for the interviewer to scan through your resume.
Most of the them are reading and listening at the same time.
That means they are neither doing justice to the reading nor to the listening.

Shock them.
Thats right. Say something that grabs attention.

" I collected 10 Lacs for the old and needy"
" I was only four years old when I played for the cricket team"
" I have acted in over 100 plays in school & college"

Make them look up from the resume.
If you can do that, you have a fighting chance!

3. Lets you control the interview
Most interviewers get bored with all the same questions and answers.
They are more than happy to take a new road if provided.

Your answer to this question will generally generate a new question.
You can control the next question!
That's right.

For e.g.

YOU: "I am a hospitality student, currently on the threshold of joining an industry I am passionate about. Infact I was crazy enough to walk into Taj Palace and ask the Duty Manager if he could spend ten minutes telling me what I can expect from a life of hoteliering"

INTERVIEWER: "Really. What did he say?"

YOU:"Oh, he was very encouraging. Told me not to look at only the glamour part, but not to forget that we ensure people are safe and comfortable. He told me all the fascinating and interesting people he had me over the years"

You see? Lead the interviewer.
Take Charge!!
The Coach!

p.s. Leave your answer to "Tell me something about yourself" in Comments and I will tell you how you can improve it!!

  5. For Sharath...

First of all, my compliments on your accomplishments.

    I would add the following:
    > Your early years or education
    > The companies/brands you worked with
    > The revenue (additional) should be in numbers (get their attention!!)
    > How many people do you manage
    > What are your aspirations? (I see myself.....)

    Hope this helps.

  6. For Abelasha,

Thank you for your kind words.

    Here are my inputs...

    > Generally an intro to yourself is meant to get you talking for a minute or so... yours seems a little less.
    > I wouldnt spend so much time on your bio tech graduation. I dont think it is that important for a job in hospitality/services. maybe you could mention about AHA first and then mention that you are a graduate in bio-tech.
having said that, please be ready for questions like 'Why did you choose this feild, after Bio-tech?'
    > Talk about your work exp a little more
    > I like your interests. something different..so that is great!

    Cheers!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Dear pari,

    Fantastic stuff!

All that the things that I have been saying for so so long are here..

    > your interests are different
    > you have shown a passion and have achieved a level of success in it
    > For this industry personality matters and with you being a finalist in a beauty contest I am sure it helps
    > languages are great. My only suggestion there, please see if you can add some foreign languages to your repertoire.

    Here are some more suggestions:
    > What is your goal/aspirations.. I mean why did you do this course..talk about that.

    All the best!

    ReplyDelete
  8. For niti,

Thank you for your kind words. you have been a regular reader, so thank you for that too!

    Here are my suggestions..
    > Talk less about your family, and more about yourself. generally it is enough to mention your family. you dont need to mention what your siblings are pursuing academically.

    > If I was the interviewer I would like to know about what aspirations you have and what is it that you want to do in the future...so talk about that.

    > It think I said this to you earlier, but again, I love your interests...go fashionably yet professionally dressed to the interview!

    Cheers!

    1. you are doing a gr8 job which really helps people in giving good interview for job.i have lost a gud job which was 90 percent in my hand as i had many references from the company itself as i was a trainee at that company for about a year.but i never use to bother n never gave importance to prepare before giving interviews as after my internship i had many job offers n use to get selected easily just on sending my CV n showing portfolios. But today i feel that i m a looser bcoz the company from where i had done my internship have 3 vacancies but i have lost that job because of my carelessness n i gave a bad interview bcoz of overconfidence.i never had even though that my fav company will offer me a job and i will loose it just because of my carelessness that i went for it without any pre preparation.Everyone at my company know that i am too good at work but only the senior most boss when interviewed me i failed to express myself in a best and impressive way and was unable to prove myself.and he is totally unaware about my capabilities.why will he believe on any body else s words speeking in my favor when he himself found me not capable in answering this silly question "tell me about yourself, something which is not mentioned in your CV">>>And i just got freezed.I lost the job about which i had always dreamt.

For on-the-job training they are probably looking for spunk, passion and an eagerness to work and learn.

research the company before hand, and tell them why you would like to intern with them.

so start with why the course you have chosen and how working with them will complete the learning.

  29. Hello Sir,
Please look into my introduction and kindly make necessary changes to it.Also kindly suggest me if its too long..

I am born and brought up in delhi.i have done a diploma in aviation, hospitality, and travel management from Frankfin institute of air hostess training.Right after completing that I joined Indigo airline as cabin crew, and was associated with the airline for around 2 and a half years and resined recently as a senior cabin crew.
My previous job gave me an opportunity to travel around the country's fascinating destinations while on being work.My on job responsibilities were customer satisfaction, and building customer relations for business development through customer interactions and at the same time maintaining best grooming standards as per the aviation industry.
I am pasionate about reading self improvement books, as I believe there is no limit to improvement, like at present I am reading a very intresting book called The monk who sold his Ferrari by Mr Robin S sharma, which is fable about how to reach your goals.
There is a saying which inspires me a lot in my personal life.It goes like this: A drop of water that falls in the ocean, is lost, but the same drop of water that falls on a rose petal, shines.I believe its extremely important for us to realize our qualities and interests and then purse the same, and that's the reason I chose to pursue a career which is sales and customer relation management oriented as I believe I can do justice to the same.

Broadly I think it is fine. You could refine a bit though.
    for example:

    - instead of saying 'i have done my diploma in travel n tourism along wid IATA/UFTAA Foundation' say 'I successfully completed my diploma in travel and tourism with an IATA/UFTAA foundation certification'
    - instead of ' I have 3 years of service experience along with administration skills in travel co. in India where i have to deal with customers and provide them with good services' try, 'I spent 3 years with XYZ company - a travel company and learnt valuable customer service and administrative skills. As a XYZ designation, my job responsibilities included a,b,c'
    - try 'After my marriage, I moved to UK in January this year, and am now seeking ......'
