I used to be in love with a statement people used for me, ' he can get the work done!' I felt powerful, masterful and some times cocky. Now only if I could wake up when I wanted to!
post continues below>
People start early in the west. Some of them will be at their desk by 0800 am and the first meeting could be scheduled at that time if you are ok with it. I found myself making it to these meetings much ahead of time. If you consider the travel time of upwards of an hour or two, that is waking up really early.
I could do the same when I was working in hotels. Morning shifts typically start at 0700 am and I would make it on time (sometimes running to the back office). I could reach class if I had to, but could never make it to breakfast in college.
where am I heading? I can wake up early for anyone else in the world, but I cant wake up for myself. That is sad!
The power is not mine, its theirs.
The power is in the hands of everyone who can make me give up my cozy bed!
This is where I lost it. Am I truly the master or am I the one who is mastered?
I am making mastering myself a top priority, starting today.
It is going to be a singular focus.
I intend to do things just for myself, I intend to achieve purely for my mind and satisfaction and I intend to challenge myself to win against myself.
I intend to beat myself into submission, to myself.
what about you?
Are you able to keep all the small promises to yourself?
let me give you examples and ask yourself if this is you:
1. You have asked your team to ensure that they always leave on time. You tell them there is more to life than just work. They leave on time, thank you. You stay in your office for another 3 hours.
2. You see a movie where the father makes it to the child's practice session, game, match etc. you think wow, how nice, cute blah blah. Its been 3 years since you even saw your child play let alone attend a school match.
3. You meet an old school/college freind and realize that they have been able to keep themselves in shape. You tell yourself you will do something about it, but.....
hmmm, you get the picture.
what can you do? two things
1. start today
2. start small.
This is from the GTD philosophy. Start by keeping small promises to yourself. Sooner you will see that you feel a lot more trusting on that person called you. In just a few months you will be telling yourself that if you want you can do anything.
I mean it. Want true power? Master Yourself!
Cheers!
